History of Champlain Discover Public School
Champlain Discovery Public School (CDPS), located at 390 Bell Street in Pembroke, Ontario, is a vibrant and welcoming learning community serving approximately 570 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Nestled just outside the city of Pembroke, our school is deeply connected to the community we serve. Many parents and even grandparents once walked these same halls as students themselves. Today, they continue to choose CDPS for their children because they value our strong academic programs, caring educators, and the community-minded environment that makes our school a special place for children to learn and grow through their elementary years.
CDPS has a rich history shaped by growth, change, and a commitment to student success. Originally built as Champlain High School, the building transitioned to the Renfrew County Catholic Board of Education in 1990, while Bishop Smith Catholic High School was transferred to the Renfrew County Board of Education and renamed Champlain Public School in March 1991. In September of that same year, the school was reorganized into a K–8 format, welcoming students from Highview, Rockwood, and Hillcrest. Reconstruction in 1992 brought further modernization, along with a new name Champlain Discovery Public School which officially opened on October 14, 1992.
To better support student learning, additional renovations were completed in 2004, adding basement classrooms and a lift. In September 2005, CDPS welcomed students from the former Laurentian Public School following its closure.
Today, CDPS continues to thrive as a safe, accepting, and inclusive school where staff and students work together to uphold a positive, respectful learning environment. Our website offers families a window into school life, including our history, school calendar, important notices, and a photo gallery highlighting school events, fundraisers, and activities. Families can also access key information such as attendance expectations, the school code of conduct, character education practices, policies and procedures, community use of schools, and transportation guidelines including how to find up-to-date school bus status.
We are proud of our students, staff, and the strong partnerships we share with families. We are glad you have chosen CDPS and warmly welcome your involvement in the many activities, events, and learning opportunities that make our school community such a meaningful place to be.
