History of Champlain Discover Public School
In September 1990 the then Renfrew County Board of Education agreed to a provincial transfer by then Minister of Education, Sean Conway, wherein the Renfrew County Board of Education transferred its secondary school in Pembroke, Champlain High School to the Renfrew County Catholic Board of Education and the Renfrew County Catholic Board of Education transferred Bishop Smith Catholic High School (now Champlain Discovery PS) to the Renfrew County Board of Education;
In March 27, 1991 the Renfrew County Board of Education renamed Fellowes Junior High to Fellowes HS and Bishop Smith School to Champlain Public School;
In September 91 the Board approved that the elementary schools in Pembroke and Petawawa would be organized in a K-8 format:
- Fellowes would be the high school in Pembroke
- Bishop Smith School, now Champlain Public School would become a new K-8 school rezoned with students from Highview, Rockwood and Hillcrest
On October 23, 1991 the Board approved the transfer of Roger Clarke to the position of Principal of Champlain Public School, effective January 1, 1992
In March 1992 the Board approved the tender for the reconstruction of Champlain Discovery PS in the amount of $1,359,000
In April 1992 the Board approved the name change of Champlain Public School to Champlain Discovery Public School for the following reasons:
- discovering reflects the natural curiosity of students
- the school's mission will explore the discovery process by emphasizing the problem-solving approach so prevalent in science and technology
- the name gives the staff and students an opportunity to quickly unite around a new identify and mission
In April 1992 the Board named Sharon Boal as the first Vice-Principal of Champlain Discovery PS
In September 1992 Champlain Discovery Public School opened with 440 students
On Wednesday, October 14, 1992 Champlain Discovery Public School was officially opened

Made renovations, added classrooms in basement, installed a lift. Population grew to over 600 when Laurentian P. S. closed.

Champlain Discovery boasted a population as high as 620 students and has levelled out to 478 in 2014. The school remains community-minded, friendly and welcoming. |
